Abstract
Complete dentures are designed to replace lost teeth and restore comfort, function and natural appearance. Unfortunately, the stomatognathic system does not always respond favorably to these oral substitutes.
Acute and chronic inflammatory changes of the oral mucosa beneath complete dentures are common, and the cause of these changes has been the subject of many reports.
Changes in the supporting tissues of denture wearers are not precipitated by local factors alone. Systemic factors such as disease, metabolic disturbance, nutritional imbalance, drug and depressed tissue resistance due to systemic disease contribute to the deterioration of basal-seat tissue. Because of these many factors the dentist or prosthodontist is faced with the problem of how to provide adequate support for a stable denture that the patient can retain and that can function comfortably without further significant loss of the remaining support structure.
Reversible abnormal changes in denture supporting tissues vary in scope and severity from simple mucosal inflammation, hyperplasia, hypertrophy, bone resorption to aggressive stomatitis and premalignant change. Despite continuous abuse of supporting structure, when new prostheses are fabricated and placed on unhealthy structures, conditions conduct to the perpetuation of a chronic pathologic state that usually leads to further deterioration of the basal support. Because of these patients are discomforted and dissatisfied with the restoration.
For success in complete denture construction, the supporting tissues should be in a state of optimum health prior to making impressions. Tissue preparation should always be considered the first treatment phase of complete denture construction. The preparation of the oral mucosa for supporting a complete denture is a multifaceted subject.
The therapy for the spectrum of condition are surgical, non-surgical, or systemic treatment. In this article, we discussed of the method of conservative tissue preparation for complete denture.
